The trick works because percentages scale: 20% is always twice 10%, and 15% is always one and a half times it. Rounding the bill first costs you a few cents at most.

How much should you tip?
In the US, 18–20% at sit-down restaurants, 15–20% for delivery (at least $3–5), 15–20% for hair, nails, massage and tattoos, $2–5 a night for hotel housekeeping, and $1–5 per bag for a bellhop. Abroad, norms are usually lower; see the country guides.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $47.80 bill: about $4.80, doubled is $9.60.
Should the tip be on the pre-tax amount?
Traditionally, yes. Enter the tax in the calculator and it tips on the pre-tax subtotal. The difference is usually under a dollar or two.
