Splitting without the awkward pause

  • Agree the method before ordering when a group mixes big and small appetites.
  • Check for auto-gratuity. Many restaurants add 18–20% for parties of six or more; don't tip twice.
  • Shared plates go in evenly: add them to everyone's items divided by the number sharing.

How do you split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill first (tip % × pre-tax subtotal), then divide the total by the number of people. For uneven orders, split tax and tip in proportion to what each person ordered.

Is it fair to split a bill evenly?

For similar orders, an even split is simplest. If one person had a steak and wine and another a salad, splitting by items is fairer, and this calculator shares tax and tip proportionally.

How is tax shared when splitting by item?

Each person pays tax in proportion to their share of the subtotal. If you ordered 30% of the food, you pay 30% of the tax and 30% of the tip.
